Old School Park, Gymea Bay

Positive comment1: Old School Park, Gymea Bay Proposed end-point of Gymea Bay bike path. Well-patronised by young children and parents, mostly in cars.

Gymea Bay Public School

Positive comment2: Gymea Bay Public School Promoting safe cycling to school will do much to reduce congestion and hazards from parents dropping them off in their cars.

Gymea Bay Rd

Positive comment3: Gymea Bay Rd This young family of four (the baby is on the back of Dad's bike!) were cycling to Gymea shops for fish and chips. They agreed that the footpath is far from ideal, and good quality cycleways would be a great investment for the community.

Gymea Bay Road, south of Avenel Rd

Issue4: Gymea Bay Road, south of Avenel Rd The kerb should be rebuilt to place the bike path outside the power pole. This cyclist was travelling on the footpath, but jumped onto the road to pass the pedestrians.

Gymea Bay Road (#186)

Issue5: Gymea Bay Road (#186) Very steep sections on footpath would need significant work to render safe for cycling.

Gymea Bay Road

Idea6: Gymea Bay Road A better option than the footpath would be to remove parking from the eastern side and build a physically separated, well-graded two-way bike path.

Gymea Bay Road (#162)

Issue7: Gymea Bay Road (#162) Another steep footpath section would need to be rebuilt if the bike path is to go there.

Gymea Bay Road

Positive comment8: Gymea Bay Road Children already regularly use the footpath for cycling.

Gymea Bay Road

Issue9: Gymea Bay Road The footpath is not wide enough to cater for adults cycling, pedestrians and children on bikes.

Gymea Bay Road, north of High St

Issue10: Gymea Bay Road, north of High St Drain and slope on footpath are hazardous for cyclists.

Forest Rd

Idea11: Forest Rd Plenty of room to remove parking from one side and use the space for a separated two-way bike path. Narrowing would help slow motor traffic, the goal of the existing road narrowings.

Sylvania Rd

Negative comment12: Sylvania Rd Steep (but short) hill is a disadvantage of this route. Is there any possibility of an off-road path through from Pine St to avoid this?

Raglan St

Issue13: Raglan St Kerbing and guttering work currently under way is needed before the route could be recommended for cycling.

Raglan St

Issue14: Raglan St Current work has caused a serious road surface hazard to cyclists (and others).

Kiora Rd South

Idea15: Kiora Rd South Plenty of room to remove parking from one side and use the space for a separated two-way bike path.

Kiora Rd and Forest Rd roundabout

Issue16: Kiora Rd and Forest Rd roundabout Roundabout is dangerous and would need careful attention: a footpath cycleway to circumnavigate the roundabout.

Warrah Rd

Idea17: Warrah Rd Bike path could be built on carriageway, or on nature strip on north-east side.

School in Warrah Rd

Issue18: School in Warrah Rd This crossing has kerb extensions which force cyclists into the path of motorists.

Yowie Bay boat ramp

Positive comment19: Yowie Bay boat ramp Trip generator - evidenced by bikes using it now.

Yowie Bay boat ramp

Positive comment20: Yowie Bay boat ramp A cycleway to the jetty would encourage healthy recreation without increasing car use.

Wonga Rd

Issue21: Wonga Rd Pedestrian crossing is dangerous for west-bound cyclists, due to concrete lip that forces them into the path of cars.

Warrah Rd at Wonga Rd

Positive comment22: Warrah Rd at Wonga Rd Wonga Rd is 11m wide: would be easy to use one lane (3m) to build a physically separated cycle way.

Head of Yowie Bay

Idea23: Head of Yowie Bay A bridge across the sewer main may be the best way to cross the creek between Clifford Rd and Matson Crescent.

Head of Yowie Bay

Idea24: Head of Yowie Bay Although the sewer pipe seems to continue to the east under private property, there may be a right of way on the left hand side of the house.

Head of Yowie Bay

Positive comment25: Head of Yowie Bay A ramp might provide access from the cycle path down to this lovely area.

Head of Yowie Bay

Negative comment26: Head of Yowie Bay Rather than the sewer pipe crossing, the route marked on the bike plan seems to climb this very steep, densely wooded and rocky area. Difficult and expensive to build, and hard to ride.

Access road from President Ave at head of Yowie Bay

Idea27: Access road from President Ave at head of Yowie Bay It may be possible to use this (private?) road to reach the President Ave footpath from Clifford Rd.

Kareena Park

Scenic28: Kareena Park A beautiful garden setting for recreational cycling.

Kareena Park

Scenic29: Kareena Park This wooden footbridge is an attractive and interesting feature of this recreational route.

Kareena Park

Scenic30: Kareena Park A relaxing and scenic recreational route.

Laguna St Public School

Positive comment31: Laguna St Public School The school will be well-connected by the proposed bike routes.

Laguna St and President Ave

Issue32: Laguna St and President Ave The traffic lights would need modification for use as a bike crossing.

Winifred Ave and President Ave

Issue33: Winifred Ave and President Ave The footpath surface would need to be widened for safety.

Reserve at north end of Winifred Ave.

Issue34: Reserve at north end of Winifred Ave. This bridge is a pleasant entrance to the reserve, but the approach needs to be smoothed, and possibly the bridge widened.

Reserve at north end of Winifred Ave.

Positive comment35: Reserve at north end of Winifred Ave. Good level access through to Binalong Ave and roads to the east.

Railway bridge over Kareena Rd

Negative comment36: Railway bridge over Kareena Rd The footpath is very narrow and has very poor sight-lines, putting cyclists and pedestrians into potential conflict. Could one of the footpaths be replaced with a wider, dedicated cycle path?

Big Sister Hostel, Karimbla Rd

Issue37: Big Sister Hostel, Karimbla Rd Hostel residents and management should be fully consulted about any shared pedestrian/cycle paths in their immediate vicinity.

Karimbla Rd

Positive comment38: Karimbla Rd A suitable, lightly-trafficked east-west route for use while a bike path in the railway corridor is negotiated and constructed.

Kiora Rd and Kingsway

Issue39: Kiora Rd and Kingsway Requires both on-road and off-road paths. The off-road (footpath) routes may need to be regulated, permitting cycling only outside peak shopping times. Bicycle parking should also be provided.

Kiora Rd and Urunga Pde

Issue40: Kiora Rd and Urunga Pde Major shopping centres should receive the greatest focus in the bikeplan. Good safe lanes and paths, well-designed intersection treatments, signage and parking will do much to encourage people to substitute bikes for cars for trips in their local area.

Kiora Rd and Karimbla Rd

Issue41: Kiora Rd and Karimbla Rd Two-lane roundabout is a hazard to cyclists. Should be replaced with stop-signs or traffic lights.

Kiora Rd and President Ave

Issue42: Kiora Rd and President Ave Major intersections require advanced stop areas and other carefully designed cycle facilities if the cycle route is to be on-road.

Forest Rd, near Walker Ave

Issue43: Forest Rd, near Walker Ave Traffic calming device is dangerous to cyclists. If an off-road path is constructed using the existing carriageway, these would have to be removed.

Gymea Bay Rd and President Ave

Issue44: Gymea Bay Rd and President Ave Major intersections require advanced stop areas and other carefully designed cycle facilities.

Gymea Bay Rd at Gymea Shopping Centre

Negative comment45: Gymea Bay Rd at Gymea Shopping Centre On-road bike lanes do not work where parking pressure is high. Cars frequently block the bike lane by double-parking or entering, waiting for, or leaving parking places. An off-road path is needed between the footpath and the parking space.

South St at Gymea station

Idea46: South St at Gymea station A sheltered secure enclosure or free bike lockers are required for this commuter bike parking area at the station. An air horn was stolen from the bike on the right the day this photo was taken.

Gymea shopping centre

Positive comment47: Gymea shopping centre The new bike parking is well-marked and well-used, but it is not secure, being vulnerable to vandalism.

IGA Supermarket, Gymea Bay Rd

Idea48: IGA Supermarket, Gymea Bay Rd A bike parking rack is needed outside the supermarket, eg beside the garbage bin.

Bicycle parking on Gymea Bay Rd near North St

Negative comment49: Bicycle parking on Gymea Bay Rd near North St This parking facility has been vandalised, demonstrating that it is not secure. All installations of these units should probably be removed and replaced with a stronger product.

Bicycle parking on Gymea Bay Rd near North St

Negative comment50: Bicycle parking on Gymea Bay Rd near North St Detail showing where one of the two main parking bars has been wrenched off its base.

Gymea Bay Rd at Gymea Shopping Centre

Negative comment51: Gymea Bay Rd at Gymea Shopping Centre The kerb extensions at the pedestrian crossing lights leave insufficient room for an on-road lane. An off-road path should be constructed between the footpath and the car parking.

Railway bridge on Gymea Bay Rd

Negative comment52: Railway bridge on Gymea Bay Rd The kerb extensions at the pedestrian crossing should be removed to make room for a separated bike path.

President Ave between Gymea Bay Rd and Koorabel Ave

Path between Talara Rd and Badto Ave

Idea56: Path between Talara Rd and Badto Ave This path provides a connection between Gymea and the railway crossing at Avery Ave.

Path between Talara Rd and Badto Ave

Issue57: Path between Talara Rd and Badto Ave Barriers would have to be removed for the cycle route.

Corner of Hotham Rd and Avery Ave

Issue58: Corner of Hotham Rd and Avery Ave The bike path should go off-road on the nature strip to avoid conflict with cars on this tight corner and climb.

Clements Pde

Issue59: Clements Pde Dangerous crossing: no provision for cyclists.

Positive comment61: Coptic Orthodox Church, corner of Bath Rd and Flora St Another destination served by the proposed bike route.

Kirrawee brick pits, Flora St

Positive comment62: Kirrawee brick pits, Flora St Whether they are developed as medium-density residential units, or remain as green space, access to a bike route will be advantageous.

Oak Rd, Kirrawee

Negative comment63: Oak Rd, Kirrawee The existing bike/parking lane does not meet AustRoads 14 standards (2m + 1.5m). Clearly the space provided is inadequate for safe cycling.

Oak Rd, Kirrawee

Negative comment64: Oak Rd, Kirrawee Kerb extension at crossing encroaches on the bike lane.

Flora St at corner of Acacia Rd

Positive comment65: Flora St at corner of Acacia Rd Council's proposed cycle/pedestrian crossing lights should be implemented as soon as possible as this is the primary obstacle on the important Flora St route.

Corner of Acacia Rd and Princes Hwy

Positive comment66: Corner of Acacia Rd and Princes Hwy The treatments here are indicative of the quality of work required at major intersections throughout the Shire.

Corner of Flora St and Glencoe St

Issue67: Corner of Flora St and Glencoe St Roundabout is dangerous for cyclists and should be replaced with stop signs, with a cycle lane along both sides of Flora St.

Corner of Flora St and Belmont St

Issue68: Corner of Flora St and Belmont St Dangerous crossing outside St Patricks Primary School, with no provision for cyclists.

Corner of Flora St and Eton St

Issue69: Corner of Flora St and Eton St This roundabout is a hazard to cycling and, given the location with school, Centrelink and shops, could perhaps be turned into a shared zone with suitable paving and reduced speed limits.

Old Princes Hwy at Sutherland rail station

Idea70: Old Princes Hwy at Sutherland rail station Pedestrian island is an ideal location for cycle parking convenient to the station and shops. It is highly visible, and could accommodate both sheltered U-bars and bike lockers. Station video surveillance should cover this area.

Old Princes Hwy at Sutherland rail station

Idea71: Old Princes Hwy at Sutherland rail station Alternative cycle parking location beside Sutherland Baby Health Centre east of Sutherland station.

East Pde Sutherland

Positive comment72: East Pde Sutherland Well-located cycle parking on the western side of the station. Should be sheltered from rain, and bike lockers provided for those requiring them. Area should be covered by station video surveillance.

Flora St west of Acacia Rd

Issue73: Flora St west of Acacia Rd While most of Flora St is low-traffic, suitable for bike/parking lanes, this section has fairly high parking pressure and may require more substantial treatment.

Corner of Flora St and Acacia Rd

Negative comment74: Corner of Flora St and Acacia Rd The draft plan shows an off-road route along this section of Acacia Rd south of Flora St. However, no kerb ramps or footpath currently exist on the eastern side of Acacia Rd.

Acacia Rd between Flora St and President Ave

Negative comment75: Acacia Rd between Flora St and President Ave A motorist reversing out of this driveway would have no way of seeing approaching cyclists or pedestrians.

Acacia Rd between President Ave and Minerva St

Negative comment76: Acacia Rd between President Ave and Minerva St An on-road route, as marked in the draft network plan, could only be achieved safely by removing one lane of motor traffic, but this would put cyclists in conflict with traffic turning left into Minerva St. An off-road path would be more feasible.

Princes Hwy south of Minerva St

Positive comment77: Princes Hwy south of Minerva St The on-road cycle/breakdown lane begins here. Before this the route should be off-road.

Acacia Rd south of Minerva St

Idea78: Acacia Rd south of Minerva St This footpath section, omitted from the draft plan, is needed to connect to Forest Rd.

Footbridge over Princes Hwy

Positive comment79: Footbridge over Princes Hwy The footbridge over Princes Hwy is an excellent link from Forest Rd to Sutherland.

Footbridge over Princes Hwy

Issue80: Footbridge over Princes Hwy The barriers at either end of the bridge should be removed to render it safe for cycling.

Glencoe St at railway

Idea81: Glencoe St at railway Although omitted from the draft plan, access under the railway is provided by this quiet street.

Footbridge over Princes Hwy

Issue82: Footbridge over Princes Hwy The lip of the kerb should be smoothed, and the barriers at either end of the bridge removed to render it safe for cycling.

Glencoe St at President Ave

Negative comment83: Glencoe St at President Ave This steep climb north of President is unattractive for cycling. The north footpath of President Ave may be a better link towards Sutherland station.

Former F6 alignment near Kirrawee Oval

Scenic84: Former F6 alignment near Kirrawee Oval A pleasant off-road recreational route.

Former F6 alignment near Kirrawee Oval

Negative comment85: Former F6 alignment near Kirrawee Oval Although shown as a 'principal' route in the draft plan, this section is clearly only suitable for mountain bikes unless major construction is undertaken. It is not clear what usage such a path would have if constructed.

Former F6 alignment at Kirrawee

Positive comment86: Former F6 alignment at Kirrawee A very wide, flat area ideal for a good-quality cycle way. However, the level of demand for this section would need to be established.

Footpath south of Oak Rd

Idea87: Footpath south of Oak Rd This path could be identified as a shared route, and provides a direct off-road path for South Kirrawee residents to the Oak Rd shopping centre and Kirrawee railway station.

Former F6 alignment at Hunter St

Positive comment88: Former F6 alignment at Hunter St A very wide, flat area ideal for a good-quality cycle way.

Singleton Pl

Negative comment89: Singleton Pl Currently, bushland and tennis courts occupy the former F6 alignment, requiring cyclists to divert to Maitland Pl and Singleton Pl.

Rulwalla Pl

Negative comment90: Rulwalla Pl A ramp or alternative path is needed to avoid dismounting at this rocky climb.

Forest Rd
