The Ideal
I know. You live in the perfect city.
Bicycle tracks wherever you want to go.
Cars take second place. Pedestrians smile sweetly and can't wait to give way to you.
Not an opening car door to disturb your dreams, no parked vehicles, picnicking parties or chatting dog owners ever dream of obstructing your path.
Showers at work, safe places to leave your bike wherever you want to stop.
Cyclists heaven!

No?

But you can help build this perfect place – or something much closer to it than now – by adding your voice/vote so our ever-listening leaders know that more and more people are cycling and understand what we need.

Below are some issues/suggestions/links to information and we hope you will find ways to help make our city more cycle friendly. We don't need to dominate. Equal rites would be fine!

Sutherland Shire Council
Sutherland Council is reviewing its cycle plan and recently State Government has promised $100,000 for improvements to cycleways in Sutherland Shire. Submissions have been delivered aiming to present the needs of a wide range of cyclists, from children and novices, to people wanting to be able to cycle instead of drive for their many activities within the Shire, or to commute to work at reasonable speed and efficiency, often going beyond the Shire.

Click here to download a copy of the submission.

Contact Jenni at sharkbike@sharkbike.org.au for more information, or your local councillor and let him/her know more people's ideas and needs for cycling within the Shire. Be friendly and enthusiastic but not aggressive. Explain what you need and why.

Sutherland – Cronulla Shared Path
Many people worked hard to get a cycleway added beside the railway line when the extra railway line was added from Cronulla to Sutherland. Unfortunately the railway work proceeded without the cycleway being included at this ideal opportunity. But the fight is not over yet. Stay tuned for more.

Sydney City Council
Sydney City Council is currently (Dec 2008) working on an extensive plan to improve cycleways and people access to the city area and nearby suburbs. The plans are being met with some support and also opposition from many groups. Contact the council with your feedback and support to give them numbers to help in negotiations. Ride the routes, ride in groups, let them know the good things.

State Government
So much could be done to make cycling safer and benefit the community in health and lower pollution. What is your local member doing about it? Does he/she know about you? Maybe they just need numbers to quote to give them courage to act. Or maybe they need your vote at the next election. Either way, they need to know that cycling matters and can change the city's future.
